Details Emerge from Accident Scene
Newly released body camera footage has shed light on the moments following Tiger Woods' vehicle overturning on a narrow road in Jupiter Island, Florida. According to the video, Woods informed responding officers that he had been on a telephone call with former President Donald Trump shortly after the incident.
The accident occurred when the athlete's SUV collided with a trailer being towed by a slower-moving pickup truck, causing Woods' vehicle to flip onto its side. Woods managed to exit the wreckage through the passenger door and spent time interacting with law enforcement. Officers on the scene reported that Woods appeared impaired and subsequently took him into custody.
Interaction with Law Enforcement
At one point during the encounter, Woods was seen walking away from the immediate scene before being summoned back by officers. During these interactions, he was heard saying, “Thank you so much. All right. You got it. Bye.” Shortly thereafter, he explicitly stated to an officer, “I was just talking with the president.” It remains unclear which party initiated the call.
Reflecting on the situation shortly after the news broke, Donald Trump commented:
“I feel so badly. He's got some difficulty. There was an accident, and that's all I know. A very close friend of mine, he's an amazing person, an amazing man. But some difficulty.”
Context and Legal Aftermath
During the exchange with the officer, Woods also expressed regret regarding comments he believed he had made the previous night, which appeared to reference Trump’s remarks about Woods' participation in the Masters tournament.
The relationship between the two figures spans many years, defined by their shared interest in golf. Notably, Trump presented Woods with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2019. Furthermore, it has been noted that Woods has been in a relationship with Vanessa Trump, the former spouse of Donald Trump Jr.
Following his arrest on charges of driving under the influence and refusal to submit to a lawful test, Woods was released. He has entered a plea of not guilty, and his legal team has petitioned the court to allow him to travel abroad for medical treatment.
