An Unfortunate Incident at First Base
The Detroit Tigers are currently awaiting medical updates regarding Javier Báez after a distressing play occurred at first base during their recent 5-2 loss to the Atlanta Braves. The veteran player was forced to leave the contest in the fifth inning, requiring the assistance of a medical cart.
Details of the Injury
The situation unfolded following a ground ball hit toward Braves shortstop Mauricio Dubón. When Dubón's throw sailed wide, Braves first baseman Matt Olson managed to retrieve the ball and attempted to tag Báez. In an effort to evade the tag, Báez made an awkward move, twisting his body and sliding late into the base with his right leg trapped underneath him.
It was immediately apparent that Báez was in significant discomfort. He was unable to place any weight on his right foot after the play, which prompted the team's medical staff to bring out the cart to assist him off the field.
Post-Game Updates
Following the conclusion of the game, Tigers manager A.J. Hinch spoke with the media regarding the status of the infielder. According to reports from the Detroit Free Press, Hinch confirmed that the injury involved the right ankle and admitted, “That one looked scary.”
The team plans to conduct further medical imaging on Wednesday to determine the extent of the damage to his ankle.
