A Stunner Turns into Controversy

For 79 minutes, Egypt seemed on the verge of one of the biggest upsets in international football. Holding a 2-0 lead against reigning champions Argentina, the team appeared destined for a historic victory. However, the momentum shifted dramatically when Lionel Messi took control, providing an assist and scoring a goal within a five-minute window. Argentina ultimately secured a 3-2 win with a stoppage-time goal, leaving the Egyptian side devastated.

The FA's Formal Grievance

The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) and head coach Hossam Hassan have strongly contested the result, citing questionable officiating. In a comprehensive statement released on Wednesday, the EFA highlighted what it described as "controversial and influential refereeing incidents" that allegedly altered the match's trajectory.

The organization stated:

"The Egyptian Football Association cannot remain silent regarding the refereeing decisions witnessed during the match against Argentina as well as the failure to make appropriate use of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system. Several key incidents raised serious concerns and left profound questions about the consistency and fairness of decisions that directly influenced the course of the game."

Specific Concerns Regarding VAR

The primary point of contention revolves around a pivotal VAR intervention in the 59th minute. After Egypt successfully scored, officials utilized VAR to review a potential foul on the opposite end of the pitch that occurred 20 seconds prior. The goal was subsequently overturned, a decision the EFA argues was fundamentally flawed. Furthermore, the EFA noted that local and international analysts have echoed their concerns, emphasizing the necessity for transparency and integrity in a tournament as prestigious as the FIFA World Cup 2026.

Coach Hossam Hassan's Reaction

Following the whistle, Egypt's head coach, Hossam Hassan, expressed intense frustration, explicitly describing the match as "rigged." During the game, Hassan confronted the officiating crew, telling them the situation was unfair and questioning their impartiality. While the official EFA statement maintained a more diplomatic tone than the coach's post-match comments, the organization remains steadfast in its belief that the team was treated unfairly throughout the contest.
