Mercedes Dominance at the Start
George Russell delivered a composed and masterful performance to win the Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix sprint race. Starting from pole position, Russell maintained his lead alongside Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli, effectively silencing concerns regarding the team's historically slow starts during the 2026 season.
Behind the leading Silver Arrows, the opening laps saw Lewis Hamilton make a bold maneuver around the outside of Oscar Piastri at Turn 2, securing fourth place. The top eight remained largely settled, with Lando Norris holding third, followed by Charles Leclerc, Max Verstappen, and Isack Hadjar.
Antonelli’s Aggressive Pursuit
The race dynamic intensified on the fifth lap as Kimi Antonelli began applying significant pressure to his teammate. The young Italian attempted an aggressive pass on the outside of Turn 1 during the following lap, but found himself forced to cut through the grass after Russell denied him the necessary space.
Determined to fight back, Antonelli launched a second charge at Turn 8. However, an apparent braking miscalculation sent him bouncing through the grass once more, allowing Lando Norris to capitalize and snatch second place. Following the incident, the Italian expressed his frustration, stating: «That was very naughty» regarding Russell’s defensive driving, although television replays suggested the battle remained within standard racing parameters.
Final Laps and Mid-Pack Action
After recovering from his off-track excursions and successfully fending off a brief challenge from Hamilton, Antonelli closed the gap to Norris. During the final lap, the Mercedes driver attempted one last move on the McLaren pilot at Turn 1 but was ultimately unable to finalize the pass, leaving the top three positions unchanged as Russell crossed the finish line first.
Further down the field, Lewis Hamilton struggled to maintain his position under pressure from Oscar Piastri. By the final lap, Hamilton slipped to sixth, overtaken by both Piastri and Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc, while Max Verstappen secured seventh. Meanwhile, Arvid Lindblad claimed the final point for Racing Bulls after a challenging race.
Lance Stroll, who began the sprint from the pitlane due to a front suspension issue, put in a notable recovery drive. He managed to outperform fellow pitlane starters, including Valtteri Bottas, Oliver Bearman, Alexander Albon, and Pierre Gasly, to finish as the highest-placed driver among those who started from the rear of the pack.
