Credential Dispute Follows Caitlin Clark Injury Coverage

Scott Agness, a respected journalist who has covered Indianapolis basketball for years, revealed on Tuesday that the Indiana Fever organization has revoked his media credentials. The move follows his recent reporting regarding the injury status of star rookie Caitlin Clark.


Agness, who founded the Substack publication Fieldhouse Files after previously serving as a beat reporter for The Athletic, reported that Clark’s absence during the May 20 matchup against the Chicago Sky was part of a broader "strategic management plan." He suggested that the decision to sit the player was due to the team’s grueling schedule—four games in eight days—rather than a severe injury.


Contested Reporting and Media Access

According to Agness, the organization demanded a retraction, labeling his claims as "inaccurate and unsubstantiated information." Agness maintained that he relied on a trusted source and declined to retract the story, though he did incorporate comments from head coach Stephanie White into his piece. White had stated during a press availability that Clark was dealing with a back issue, rather than being part of a broader management strategy.


The Professional Basketball Writers Association (PBWA) WNBA Chapter has publicly criticized the Fever's decision. In a formal statement, the organization noted:

“The PBWA objects in the strongest possible terms to any reporter losing access for the act of reporting. Any effort to prevent reporters from doing the work of informing the public reflects poorly on any team and league which attempts to do so, and runs contrary to the best interests of all involved, most of all the public.”

History of Tensions with the Organization

This is not the first time Agness has faced issues with Pacers Sports & Entertainment, the parent company of both the Pacers and the Fever. He has been barred from Pacers credentials since 2024 following a dispute over parking during the NBA All-Star Game—a claim he has consistently denied.
