FORT WORTH, Texas — Madison Booker once tried to bluff her head coach, Vic Schaefer, during a game of “two truths and a lie.” It was a rare tactical error by the All-American; Schaefer, who prides himself on knowing every nuance of his squad, wasn't fooled for a second.

A New Era for the Longhorns

Following a decisive victory over Michigan that secured a spot in the Fort Worth 3 regional, Schaefer cemented his legacy by becoming the first head coach to guide multiple programs to the Final Four multiple times. Despite this impressive resume, the ultimate goal—a national championship—has remained just out of reach throughout his career.

Schaefer has been agonizingly close before. In 2018, his Mississippi State team fell in the final seconds to Notre Dame. A year earlier, after ending UConn's historic 111-game winning streak, his Bulldogs fell in the title game. Last season, Texas struggled to keep pace with an elite South Carolina squad. However, the current iteration of the Longhorns feels different.

«We don't have to live and die with every defensive possession to try to grind out a 61-59 win,» Schaefer remarked. «We can score.»

A Deep and Versatile Roster

This team possesses a rare combination of Schaefer’s signature elite defensive pressure and a potent, multifaceted offense. Kentucky head coach Kenny Brooks noted after facing them, «That team is as well-constructed a team as I've ever seen in women's basketball.»

The roster is anchored by the resilient Rori Harmon, whose floor leadership and defensive tenacity set the tone, and the lethal scoring ability of Madison Booker, whom Brooks compared to a «mini-Kevin Durant.» With supplementary threats like Jordan Lee and a strong presence in the paint from Breya Cunningham and Kyla Oldacre, the Longhorns offer opponents no easy answers.

Forged Through Adversity

The journey to becoming title contenders wasn't without hurdles. After a mid-season slump and a tough loss to Vanderbilt, Schaefer publicly challenged his team's toughness. The response was immediate and emphatic. The team went on an undefeated tear, winning their subsequent games by an average margin of over 26 points, with a defensive focus that has stifled opponent scoring.

This resurgence included a statement victory over SEC rival South Carolina in the conference championship, signaling that the Longhorns have found their rhythm at the perfect time.

The Final Step

As Schaefer prepares for his fourth Final Four appearance, he carries the weight of Texas basketball history, maintaining close ties with legendary coach Jody Conradt. While he is cautious about making predictions, he acknowledges the unique potential of this group.

«This team, they got a chance,» Schaefer said. «Yep, they got a chance to be, for sure.»
