Overcoming Physical Setbacks
For the New York Knicks, managing the health of Jalen Brunson is a top priority, making any sign of discomfort a cause for concern. However, Brunson demonstrated remarkable resilience during Game 1 of the 2026 NBA Finals, effectively neutralizing the San Antonio Spurs despite enduring two distinct injury scares.
The star guard ultimately recorded 30 points, shooting 12-of-31 from the field. His performance proved instrumental in the Knicks' 105-95 triumph, as he took control of the game during the second half to secure the series lead.
A Difficult Start
Brunson's evening began with a moment of apprehension in the first quarter when he was forced to head to the locker room. The incident occurred following a collision with Spurs wing Harrison Barnes, who fell into Brunson’s knee while battling for a rebound. Although he returned to the bench early in the second quarter with a protective wrap on his knee, he clearly appeared limited.
Shortly after re-entering the action, Brunson suffered another setback. During a drive to the basket, Spurs center Luke Kornet landed on his foot, appearing to cause an injury to his left ankle. Visibly frustrated, Brunson expressed his displeasure with referee Scott Foster regarding a missed call on the play.
Leading the Charge
Despite the persistent pain, Brunson remained on the floor and continued to produce at a high level. At one point during the tightly contested first half, he showcased his offensive prowess by scoring eight consecutive points for New York.
The Knicks entered the contest managing other health-related issues as well, most notably rotation player Mitchell Robinson, who played despite having undergone surgery on a broken finger just last week.
Brunson’s determination proved to be the difference-maker, as he exploded for 19 points in the second half. His late-game heroics helped the Knicks clinch their 12th consecutive victory in the postseason. The teams are set to face off again for Game 2 this Friday in San Antonio.
