Los Angeles Angels outfielder Jo Adell delivered a defensive performance for the ages on Saturday, single-handedly robbing the Seattle Mariners of three home runs to secure a dramatic 1-0 victory.
Adell's incredible feat began by stealing a homer from star catcher Cal Raleigh in the early innings. He repeated the act against first baseman Josh Naylor later in the game. The most crucial play came in the ninth inning, as Adell leaped into the right-field stands to snatch a game-tying home run from J.P. Crawford, a call upheld after review.
"Sometimes you've got to help on the other side of the ball. I'm glad I did my job tonight," Adell said post-game. According to Sports Info Solutions, which has tracked such plays since 2004, no player had ever recorded three home run robberies in one game before Adell.
The performance impressed even former Angels Gold Glover Torii Hunter, who was in attendance. Adell, a former top prospect, is off to a slow offensive start this season but showcased his elite defensive capabilities. Meanwhile, Mariners' Cal Raleigh remains homerless this season, though he tipped his cap to Adell's historic night.
