A Major Shift in the Pitching Rotation
With the 2026 MLB trade deadline approaching, the first significant transaction of the season has been confirmed. The Houston Astros are parting ways with veteran starter Lance McCullers Jr., sending him to the Milwaukee Brewers, according to reporting by Chandler Rome.
Although McCullers held a no-trade clause within his existing contract, he opted to waive it to facilitate the deal, effectively closing the chapter on his 12-year career in Houston.
Brewers Bolster Their Bullpen
The arrival of McCullers provides depth to a Brewers pitching unit that has demonstrated impressive form this season. During the first half of the year, the Milwaukee staff maintained a 3.48 ERA, ranking them as the second-best in Major League Baseball, trailing only the New York Yankees.
The move comes at a critical juncture for Milwaukee, as the team deals with several injury setbacks. Following the All-Star break, Brandon Woodruff was moved from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day IL due to persistent shoulder issues, and Kyle Harrison was sidelined this week with elbow discomfort.
A Fresh Start After Career Challenges
McCullers is looking to revitalize his performance following a difficult campaign, during which he currently holds a 2-3 record and a 6.86 ERA. Throughout his career, the pitcher has faced numerous physical hurdles:
- He sat out the entire 2019 season following Tommy John surgery.
- He missed both the 2023 and 2024 seasons due to procedures to address bone spurs and a flexor tendon repair.
Additional Terms of the Trade
Beyond the veteran starter, the deal also sees left-handed pitcher Colton Gordon moving to the Milwaukee organization. Gordon, who has seen limited action at the major league level this season, holds an 11.57 ERA after giving up 12 earned runs across 9.1 innings of work.
