Betts Reinstated Amid Dodgers’ Losing Streak

Mookie Betts has officially rejoined the Los Angeles Dodgers active roster. The star shortstop was activated from the injured list prior to Monday's game against the San Francisco Giants. Despite his return, the team suffered a 9-3 defeat, marking their third loss in a row.

Betts, batting in the second spot, recorded one hit in five at-bats during the contest. The veteran had been out of action since April 5, following an injury sustained during a matchup with the Washington Nationals. While running the bases, Betts reported discomfort in his lower back; a subsequent MRI confirmed a strained right oblique.


Looking Back at Performance Trends

Before his stint on the injured list, Betts struggled to find his rhythm this season, hitting .179/.281/.429 with a pair of home runs and seven RBIs across eight appearances. Reflecting on his previous campaign, Betts noted his efforts to adjust his plate discipline following early-season health challenges, ultimately finishing the year with 20 home runs and 82 RBIs. His defensive contribution remained a bright spot, as he recorded 17 Defensive Runs Saved and 5 Outs Above Average at the shortstop position.


Strategic Management of the Return

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts emphasized a measured approach regarding Betts' integration back into the daily grind.

"We will be cautious with his workload, as he won't be playing every single day right away,"
Roberts explained. The current schedule involves Betts playing Tuesday, followed by a rest day on Wednesday, with hopes of returning to the starting lineup on Thursday.


Roster Adjustments

To accommodate Betts' return, the organization optioned infielder Alex Freeland to Triple-A Oklahoma City. The 23-year-old Freeland, who saw significant action at second base early in the season, maintained a .235/.309/.337 slash line while providing solid defensive metrics. The team move is intended to ensure Freeland continues to receive consistent playing time.

The Dodgers weighed several roster configurations before making the decision. Alternative candidates such as Hyeseong Kim were considered, but Kim's recent success at shortstop—posting a .289/.353/.395 line—made him a valuable current asset. Similarly, Santiago Espinal remains an important utility option for the club, valued for his reliability in a versatile role.
