A Bold Coaching Proposal

A recent report by Seth Wickersham for ESPN offers a detailed look at the internal atmosphere within the Denver Broncos during the lead-up to their 2026 playoff run. Beyond the team's preparations for critical matchups against the Buffalo Bills and New England Patriots, the piece highlights an unexpected idea once harbored by Broncos head coach Sean Payton regarding his longtime peer, Bill Belichick.

The Strategic Collaboration

The relationship between Payton and Belichick spans many years, rooted in their shared history on Bill Parcells’ coaching staff and their enduring tenures in the NFL. Following Belichick’s departure from the Patriots after the 2023 season, he stood at 333 career victories. According to the report, Payton considered approaching Broncos owner Greg Penner with an unconventional proposal.

The plan envisioned hiring Belichick as the head coach until he secured 15 additional wins. This would have brought his career total to 348, allowing him to surpass the legendary Don Shula for the most wins in NFL history. Under this arrangement, Payton intended to serve as the assistant head coach before stepping back into the lead role once the milestone was achieved.

Why the Idea Was Shelved

Ultimately, the plan never moved past the conceptual stage. Payton opted not to present it to ownership, concluding that the logistics were overly complex and perhaps overly idealistic. As the report notes:

«Payton never officially asked Penner about the idea, determining that it was too complicated and too much wishful thinking for a friend.»

Current Status

The proposal remained a hypothetical scenario that never gained traction. Belichick has since transitioned out of the NFL and is currently serving as the head coach at the University of North Carolina, where he is currently in his second season.
