The End of a Remarkable Run

Wednesday marked a rare occurrence for Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani, as he failed to reach base in a regular-season game for the first time since August 23, 2025. During the Dodgers' 3-0 defeat to the San Francisco Giants, Ohtani recorded an 0-for-4 performance with no walks, snapping his streak at 53 consecutive games.

Entering the matchup, Ohtani was tied with Shawn Green for the second-longest streak by a Dodgers player in the modern era, dating back to 1900. While his run was historic, it ultimately concluded five games shy of Duke Snider’s franchise record of 58 games and remains 31 games behind the all-time MLB record of 84 games, set by Ted Williams.

Dominant Pitching from the Giants

Giants starting pitcher Tyler Mahle played a pivotal role in limiting Ohtani's offensive output. Mahle faced Ohtani three times, securing two groundouts and one strikeout. Mahle delivered an impressive seven scoreless innings in total, while Caleb Kilian handled Ohtani's final appearance at the plate in the eighth inning.

Ohtani’s most promising opportunity arrived in the third inning when he hit a sharp 103.1 mph grounder. However, Giants first baseman Rafael Devers managed to execute a high-quality defensive play to secure the out.

Continued Excellence on the Mound

Despite his uncharacteristic night at the plate, Ohtani showcased his elite skills as a pitcher. Over six scoreless innings, he recorded seven strikeouts, allowed only five hits, and issued zero walks. His ERA currently stands at a remarkable 0.38 after four starts.

Highlighting his incredible consistency this year, one could observe a unique statistic:

«Ohtani currently has as many earned runs allowed this season as games in which he has failed to reach base: one.»

Additionally, while Ohtani has successfully reached base in every other game this season, he is currently on track to record his lowest OPS (.854) since 2020—the year prior to his inaugural MVP season.
