Ensuring Continuity in Fort Worth

TCU has reportedly finalized a multi-year contract extension to keep Sonny Dykes at the helm of the football program. This update comes following reports from ESPN’s Pete Thamel, confirming that the university is moving to lock in its head coach long-term.

Progressing Toward an Agreement

The groundwork for this deal had been in motion for several months. Back in February, TCU athletic director Mike Buddie publicly acknowledged that negotiations were underway and that the two parties were nearing an agreement. Prior to this extension, Dykes was under contract through the end of the 2028 season, with his compensation for the previous year exceeding $7 million. Specific financial terms and the exact duration of the new agreement have not yet been formally disclosed.

A Strong Tenure at TCU

Dykes joined the Horned Frogs in 2022 after a successful five-year stint at SMU. His impact was immediate and historic:

  • Instant Success: In his debut 2022 season, Dykes guided the team to a remarkable 13-2 record and secured a spot in the national championship game.
  • Consistent Performance: Over the last two seasons, the program has maintained a solid level of competitiveness, finishing both years with a 9-4 record.
  • Postseason Victories: Under his leadership, the team achieved notable wins in both the New Mexico Bowl and the Alamo Bowl.

Since his arrival in 2022, Dykes has overseen a program-high 36 victories, the most achieved by any team within the Big 12 conference during that period.
