The Houston Texans moved quickly to secure defensive end Will Anderson with a contract extension through 2030 after he became eligible. However, the team has taken a slower approach with quarterback C.J. Stroud, who was drafted just one pick before Anderson in 2023.
While the Texans exercised Stroud's fifth-year option for 2027 and have consistently expressed belief in him, a rough end to the 2025 season led to a different strategy compared to Anderson's swift deal. On Monday, team owner Cal McNair provided little update on negotiations between Stroud's camp and General Manager Nick Caserio, but reaffirmed the organization's commitment to the young quarterback.
McNair stated, "We're fully committed to C.J. We exercised his fifth-year option and we'll see how that all works out." With the option in place and no urgency from Stroud's side, the Texans appear unlikely to rush a new contract before returning to the field. This could make Stroud's extension a major topic next offseason, with potential shifts in both sides' positions by then.
