The Evolution of a Sports Media Veteran

For over two decades, Tony Reali was a staple of ESPN, most notably as the host of Around the Horn. Spanning nearly 23 years and 4,953 episodes, his time at the network saw him grow from a sports-obsessed newcomer into one of the industry's most recognizable personalities. Following the show's conclusion in May 2025, Reali stepped away from the spotlight to re-evaluate his career path in an era increasingly dominated by independent creators.

Rather than seeking a traditional television role, Reali chose to pivot toward a more entrepreneurial model. «I wanted to create not the next job search, but the next job venture,» Reali explained. «I wanted to do something different.»

Launching ‘Real Deal’

Reali’s new project, Real Deal with Tony Reali, is the inaugural production of his own company, Real Ones Media, developed in partnership with iHeartMedia. The podcast focuses on deep dives into iconic sports moments, blending elements of a talk show, game show, and intimate interview format.

Reflecting on his creative philosophy, Reali notes that the show is built around emotional resonance: «It all comes back to feelings. I’m a big feelings guy. It’s a great unlocking for me sharing in the connection you feel with sports.»

Independence and Industry Shifts

During his hiatus, Reali intentionally studied the creator economy, focusing on ownership and the freedom associated with independent media businesses. While he received various offers from major networks and platforms, he opted for a strategic partnership with iHeartMedia to maintain his creative independence.

Reali observed a broader trend in the industry where networks are moving toward licensing models, such as ESPN’s arrangements with The Pat McAfee Show or The Rich Eisen Show. He recognized that the landscape was shifting toward digital-first programming: «It became apparent to me that those offers are going elsewhere. So, it wasn’t a feeling of I’m on the outs. It was about preparing myself to be the most attractive candidate or building my own brand.»

Moving Beyond the Past

While the end of Around the Horn marked the close of a massive chapter, Reali does not view the cancellation as a professional failure. He remains grateful for the support of the audience and his time at ESPN. Though he has no active plans to return to the network, he remains open to the possibility of a one-off appearance.

«I’m not running from my past,» Reali stated. «There’s no ‘I’m not working with them’ feelings at all. Of course, I’ll do a show and be happy to see people if they’re interested. But that’s not going to be my only brand.»

Future Goals

Looking ahead, Reali’s focus is on building a robust portfolio of projects rather than chasing top-tier rankings. He plans to expand Real Deal and eventually develop additional ventures that explore the emotional depth of sports culture. By leveraging his background in production and his experience in the industry, Reali aims to connect with fans through live events and new content formats, proving that his most compelling stories are still ahead of him.
