The University of Virginia has named Aaron Roussell as its new women's basketball head coach, concluding a turbulent period following the dismissal of Amaka Agugua-Hamilton. The Cavaliers announced the hiring on Tuesday, bringing in Roussell after his seven-year tenure at Richmond.
Roussell compiled a 148-72 record with the Spiders, leading them to three consecutive NCAA tournament appearances and securing their first tournament win in 2025. He takes over a Virginia program that recently made a surprise run to the Sweet 16 but now faces instability.
The coaching change occurred abruptly after the season, with Agugua-Hamilton's firing linked to an internal investigation. Since then, six Virginia players, including top scorer Kymora Johnson, have entered the transfer portal.
