A Forced Change for Arrow McLaren

Heading into the most significant race on the calendar, Arrow McLaren driver Pato O'Ward has faced a major setback. The No. 5 car, which he utilized throughout the previous week and during his qualifying sessions, was rendered unusable following an accident last Monday. This unfortunate event has compelled the team to switch to a backup vehicle for the upcoming race at the Brickyard.

While this backup chassis is a familiar piece of machinery that O'Ward has experience with, it is not the vehicle he prepared with all month. The damaged car, affectionately known as "Lana," had been his constant companion during his previous attempts to secure a victory at the iconic track.

Adapting to a New Setup

Despite the unexpected transition, O'Ward maintains a positive outlook regarding the team's ability to replicate his preferred performance settings. In a recent interview, the driver acknowledged the natural nerves that come with such a last-minute change:

«Obviously, like anyone, I do have my nerves because it's not the car we've been using all month, it's not the one I qualified, and I haven't done any race simulations»

However, O'Ward remains confident that the technical data and setups developed over the last few weeks can be successfully applied to the backup car. He noted that the replacement chassis is one with which he has previously achieved high speeds and race wins, providing him with the necessary confidence to perform competitively.

The Potential for a Turning Point

O'Ward has come agonizingly close to winning the Indy 500 in the past, earning podium finishes in 2022, 2024, and 2025—all behind the wheel of "Lana." Switching to a different chassis, which has historically performed well on shorter ovals, might provide the unexpected spark needed to finally secure a win.

Addressing the change, O'Ward reflected on the significance of leaving his long-time car behind for the first time in his Indy 500 career:

  • The damaged car, "Lana," had accompanied him in every previous Indy 500 appearance.
  • The new car is a proven performer that has brought him success in other events.
  • The driver is keeping the name of his current backup car a mystery, teasing that it is a bit "Rated R," but promising to reveal it if he takes the checkered flag.

With his team working diligently to ensure the backup is dialed in to his exact specifications, O'Ward is optimistic that this change of pace could lead to his first career victory at the prestigious Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
