An Unplanned Decision
Brock Lesnar has maintained one of the most formidable reputations in the history of combat sports. While his sheer physical stature is enough to intimidate any opponent, his collection of tattoos has become a signature part of his aesthetic. Among them, the sword spanning his chest is arguably his most notorious piece of ink—an addition the superstar admits was never part of his plan.
The Story Behind the Ink
During a recent episode of the Spittin’ Chiclets podcast, the former WWE and UFC heavyweight champion candidly explained that the tattoo was the result of a chaotic night out. Following his initial departure from the WWE in 2004 to pursue a career in the NFL, Lesnar found himself in Scottsdale, Arizona, dealing with the aftermath of a motorcycle accident and significant life changes.
Reflecting on the evening, Lesnar recalled:
«I got that tattoo, I was s*-faced drunk in Scottsdale. I was in Scottsdale, training for the NFL, had just gotten in a motorcycle accident. I was just kicked down hard. I was going through all that stuff. There was a tattoo shop across the street from the biker bar, and that’s not a good place to have a tattoo shop. I got this tattoo — I didn’t even know I got the damn thing. I wake up the next day, and I’m like, 'What in the [expletive] is this thing?' No planning whatsoever. It was half a gallon of vodka and maybe a few Vicodin.»
Finding Meaning in the Chaos
Though the tattoo was born from an impulsive, alcohol-fueled decision, Lesnar eventually began to view the image as a reflection of the pressures he faced at that time. He noted that the sword became a symbol of his struggle during his transition into the NFL.
«The meaning behind it was, I felt like my back was against the wall and somebody had a sword, a knife stuck to my throat. Like, what are you going to do now? I walked over there, and I said, 'Let’s put a big-a ugly sword on my chest,'» Lesnar explained.
Following his time pursuing professional football, Lesnar eventually transitioned into the world of Mixed Martial Arts and cemented his legacy in the UFC before making his way back to professional wrestling. Currently, the 48-year-old athlete is preparing for a major match at WrestleMania 42 against Oba Femi, scheduled for April 18 or 19.
