The UConn Dominance
Geno Auriemma's UConn Huskies appear more formidable than ever, entering the NCAA tournament with a perfect 34-0 record, even after navigating the season without Paige Bueckers. Their dominance in the Big East was total, highlighted by a 90-51 victory over Villanova in the championship game and a 100-51 rout of Creighton in the semifinals.
Throughout the season, they dispatched five ranked opponents by an average margin of 20 points. Their closest call came back on November 21, when they narrowly defeated then-No. 6 Michigan 72-69. Since that time, only Villanova has managed to keep a game within 14 points. However, questions remain regarding how the Huskies will handle elite, battle-tested competition during the high-pressure environment of a single-elimination tournament, especially given the lack of highly ranked opposition in their regular-season schedule.
UCLA: The Primary Threat
If any team is poised to dethrone UConn, it is undoubtedly UCLA. Boasting a 34-1 record, the Bruins have proven themselves against a significantly more demanding schedule, including a grueling run through the Big Ten. While UConn faced five ranked opponents, UCLA encountered 13, winning 12 of them.
Their credentials are undeniable, evidenced by a crushing 96-45 win over No. 9 Iowa in the Big Ten title game and an impressive 19-1 record against Quad 1 opponents. Even Auriemma himself has voiced respect for the Bruins, stating: «If you said UCLA is the No.1, I would say, 'Wow, they’re really damn good, and I would have absolutely no problem with that.'»
The SEC Contenders
Beyond UCLA, the most significant threats emerge from the SEC, led by a surging Texas squad. Having handed UCLA its only loss, Texas enters the tournament on an eight-game winning streak. Their dominance was on full display in the SEC championship, where they dismantled No. 3 South Carolina 78-61. With a stellar 14-3 record against Quad 1 opposition, Texas is elite on both offense and defense.
South Carolina remains a premier contender despite their recent loss to Texas. With a 31-3 record and a regular-season SEC title, the Gamecocks are a well-balanced powerhouse. Under the leadership of three-time national champion head coach Dawn Staley, they possess both the depth and the pedigree to challenge for the title.
Finally, LSU rounds out the group of potential spoilers. Though their record against top-tier competition has been inconsistent, they possess a veteran core led by All-SEC standout Flau’jae Johnson. Furthermore, head coach Kim Mulkey, a four-time national champion, brings a level of experience that makes the Tigers a dangerous opponent for any team in the bracket.
