Retired Duke basketball coaching legend Mike Krzyzewski has voiced strong opposition to expanding the NCAA tournament, labeling the idea "a big mistake." He shared his views on a recent podcast, stating, "There are less teams capable right now than ever before. I don't think you mess with something that is gold. It's gold."

This stance puts him at odds with NCAA President Charlie Baker, who has publicly favored expansion to include more teams, arguing that many good programs are unfairly left out each year. Currently, both the men's and women's tournaments feature 68 teams.

The selection committee is actively considering expanding the field to 72 or 76 teams, with a potential implementation for the 2026-27 season. The men's tournament last expanded in 2011 with the addition of the "First Four" round.
