Legal proceedings against Kansas City Chiefs defensive backs coach Dave Merritt have concluded. On Thursday, the District Court of Johnson County, Kansas, officially dismissed the domestic battery charge brought against him. This decision, made without prejudice, comes approximately two weeks after the coach was initially taken into custody, as indicated by official court documentation.
Background of the Incident
Merritt, 54, has served as a defensive assistant for the Chiefs since 2019. Following his arrest on the evening of April 22, he was booked on suspicion of domestic battery. Legal filings submitted by the district attorney’s office on April 23 categorized the case as a Class B person misdemeanor involving domestic violence. The complaint alleged that the coach had “unlawfully, knowingly or recklessly [caused] bodily harm” to one of his daughters.
Following his arrest, Merritt entered a plea of not guilty and was subsequently released on a $2,500 bond.

Regarding the dismissal, Merritt’s defense attorney, Ryan Ginie, stated: «The DA’s office looked at it a little more thoroughly and reviewed some additional information and agreed it was a matter that should be dismissed.»

Merritt has been a key figure in the Chiefs' coaching staff for seven seasons, contributing to all three Super Bowl victories during the franchise's current era under head coach Andy Reid. His extensive background includes 13 seasons with the New York Giants, where he also secured two championship rings while working alongside current Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo.
Throughout his tenure in Kansas City, Merritt has been instrumental in the development of elite secondary players, including cornerback Trent McDuffie.
