The 152nd Kentucky Derby concluded on Saturday with a historic victory by the 23-to-1 long shot, Golden Tempo. While the entire week of festivities saw significant financial success, the main event itself failed to surpass the betting handle record established in 2025.

According to Churchill Downs Inc., the total all-sources wagering for the entire race week reached a record-setting $487 million, representing a 13% increase compared to the previous year. However, the Kentucky Derby race itself recorded $225 million in bets—a 3.8% decline from the $234 million wagered during the 2025 event.

Despite this slight dip, the $225 million figure remains the second-highest amount ever recorded for the Run for the Roses.


Performance Highlights and Payouts

The event made history in more ways than one. Golden Tempo, ridden by Jose Ortiz and trained by Cherie DeVaux, became the first horse trained by a woman to win the Kentucky Derby. The horse completed the 1 ¼-mile race in 2:02.27, narrowly defeating the favorite, Renegade, and securing a $3.1 million payout.

  • Winner Payout: A $2 bet on Golden Tempo returned $48.24 for the win, $19.14 for place, and $11.90 for show.
  • Exotic Bets: A $1 exacta paid out $278.
  • High-Stakes Returns: A $1 trifecta involving the top three finishers paid $11,250, while a $1 superfecta reached $94,489.

Economic Impact and Industry Growth

The rise of legalized sports betting across the U.S. following the 2018 overturning of PASPA has contributed to the continued profitability of horse racing. Major operators, including DraftKings, facilitated wagering on the event in over 25 states this year.

Churchill Downs remains optimistic about the financial health of the event. The company projected that Derby Week would generate an increase in Adjusted EBITDA of $15 million to $18 million year-over-year, marking a potential company record.
