Reflecting on a High-Stakes Return

Almost 48 hours after her high-profile return to mixed martial arts—a comeback that ended after a 17-year hiatus in just 17 seconds—Gina Carano has shared her thoughts on the much-hyped matchup against UFC Hall of Famer Ronda Rousey. In a candid Instagram post, the 44-year-old admitted she was feeling the weight of the loss.

«I wanted to throw, battle, win, but I kicked when I should have moved and was down and done,» Carano wrote. «If I hadn’t tapped she would’ve broken my arm, as it had begun to crackle. The disappointment of losing like that is very humbling.»

The Road to the Octagon

For Carano, who holds a 7-2 record, this weekend represented a massive career milestone. As a foundational figure in women's MMA, Carano was the sport's biggest star long before Rousey rose to prominence in 2013. She made history in 2007 by participating in the first televised women's bout on Showtime and later headlined a major event against Cris Cyborg in 2009. Following that era, she stepped away from professional fighting to pursue an acting career, only returning to the cage at Rousey’s request for a major MMA event on Netflix.

Physical Challenges and Future Prospects

Preparing for the bout proved to be an immense physical undertaking for Carano, who revealed that she underwent a rigorous 20-month journey, losing 100 pounds to return to competition form. She described the process as mentally and physically taxing, noting that she spent a year in a caloric deficit while rediscovering her identity as an athlete.

Despite the abrupt nature of the defeat, Carano remains optimistic about her future. She hinted that she is not finished with her journey, stating:

«Now I feel like this is just the beginning. I can’t wait to see where I can push my body to go next.»

Support from Peers and Respect for the Process

Carano found solace in words of encouragement from UFC legends Jon Jones and Cain Velasquez following the fight. She highlighted their support as a vital turning point in her mindset after the loss. Furthermore, she expressed deep respect for her opponent, Ronda Rousey, acknowledging her dual role as a legendary athlete and a person. She also credited the California Athletic Commission for their strict oversight and medical compliance, while praising the event organizers for their production quality.
