A Quest for the Golden Puck
Following his game-winning goal that propelled the United States to its first Olympic hockey gold medal in nearly half a century, Jack Hughes has expressed his desire to possess the historic puck. Currently, the artifact resides in the Hockey Hall of Fame in Canada, a situation Hughes finds unacceptable.
«I’m trying to get it,» Hughes remarked in an interview. «Like, that’s bullsh--- that the Hockey Hall of Fame has it, in my opinion. Why would they have that puck?»
The Disputed Ownership
While Hughes initially expressed uncertainty regarding the puck's whereabouts, it was later revealed that the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) holds the formal rights to the object. Subsequently, it was the IIHF that transferred the puck to the Hockey Hall of Fame.
Although neither Hughes nor women's hockey star Megan Keller—who also scored a gold-medal-winning goal—technically own their respective pucks, such cases often diverge from historical precedents where players are permitted to retain significant mementos.
Precedents in Professional Sports
Instances of athletes keeping milestone memorabilia are common. For example, while the Miami Heat held formal ownership of Bam Adebayo’s gear from his 83-point game, the organization allowed him to keep the items. Similarly, stars like Alex Ovechkin and Tom Brady have successfully retained jerseys from their record-breaking career moments without opposition from their respective teams.
The circumstances surrounding the removal of the puck, which occurred without the players' direct knowledge, have struck many as unusual—particularly given the Canadian connection of the Hall of Fame.
Intentions for the Souvenir
Hughes remains adamant about his claim, noting that he would like to present the puck to his father. «I don’t see why Megan Keller or I shouldn’t have those pucks,» he stated. Despite the strict technical ownership policies regarding game equipment, reports indicate that the players were at least permitted to keep the jerseys worn during their gold-medal victories.
