Jack Hughes, the New Jersey Devils star who scored the overtime gold-medal winning goal for Team USA against Canada at the 2026 Winter Olympics, continues to be celebrated across the NHL. One day after a hero's welcome at home, he received a standing ovation from the typically hostile Pittsburgh Penguins crowd during player introductions on Thursday.
The Penguins won the game 4-1, with Hughes recording an assist and two shots on goal. He is expected to receive similar appreciative receptions from fans for the remainder of the season, except perhaps when the Devils play in Canada. Only one such regular-season game remains, on April 5 in Montreal.
Hughes secured his place in hockey history with his decisive Olympic goal last Sunday. The former first overall NHL draft pick has battled injuries throughout his career, including one shortly before the Games. His legend grew further as he scored the golden goal shortly after losing two front teeth.
Between winning gold in Italy and returning to the Devils, Hughes visited the White House with teammates, attended the State of the Union address, and addressed his team. His focus now returns to the Devils, who hold a 29-29-2 record after the loss in Pittsburgh.
