A Shared Path for Top Draft Picks

New York Islanders defenseman Matthew Schaefer, a former first-overall pick, understands the unique transition Gavin McKenna is currently facing. Having been drafted by the Islanders in 2025—just one year before the Toronto Maple Leafs selected McKenna—Schaefer is well-positioned to offer guidance to the player he grew up competing against.

Advice for the Spotlight

While attending the Smilezone Celebrity Golf Tournament in Brampton, Schaefer shared his thoughts on the immense expectations placed upon a top pick in a high-intensity market like Toronto. His primary advice to the rookie was simple:

«Yeah, I mean, just enjoy it. Obviously, he’s in Toronto, and me growing up in Toronto, obviously Toronto’s known for its hockey and stuff just growing up. Toronto’s always the hot spot for tournaments and things like that. But especially hockey. So it’s going to be awesome for him.»

Schaefer emphasized that despite the pressure, McKenna’s natural talent as a player will be his greatest asset as he navigates his rookie campaign.

The Importance of Confidence

Looking back at his own Calder Trophy-winning season, where he tallied 59 points in 82 games, Schaefer highlighted the necessity of building confidence through proper development. He noted that although their positions differ—Schaefer on defense and McKenna at forward—the foundational approach to success remains consistent:

«At the end of the day, I think if your teammates and coaches and stuff like that, if they help develop you well and they bring you up. And for me, I started off on the third line, and then I worked my way up... I think if you can just get that confidence early and just run with it, then you’ll do good.»

Early Season Encounters

The two players will have an early opportunity to test their skills against one another, as the Islanders are set to face the Maple Leafs in Toronto at the start of the season. For Schaefer, returning to his home city to play against a rising star like McKenna is a prospect he anticipates with excitement.

As the Maple Leafs look to bounce back from a season without postseason action, McKenna stands as a pivotal addition to the roster. While the expectations are high, Schaefer’s message remains consistent: cherish the journey, stay grounded with family, and never stop putting in the work.
