Disciplinary Action Follows Controversial Celebration

Major League Baseball has handed down a one-game suspension and an undisclosed financial penalty to Milwaukee Brewers relief pitcher Abner Uribe. The disciplinary measures were issued this past Friday following an incident during Tuesday’s 6-0 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals, where Uribe performed a suggestive “crotch chop” gesture toward the opposing dugout.

According to league officials, Uribe is currently appealing the suspension, which was originally slated to coincide with Friday’s game against the Houston Astros.


The Incident on the Mound

The controversy unfolded at the conclusion of the eighth inning. After securing a final strikeout, which was confirmed following a challenge by the Cardinals, Uribe turned toward the St. Louis bench and made multiple, aggressive crotch-chop motions. At the time of the incident, the Brewers held a comfortable six-run lead.


Leadership Response and Apology

Brewers manager Pat Murphy expressed significant dissatisfaction with his player's behavior immediately following the contest.

«I don’t know what got over him. I mean, he’s an emotional guy, but that kind of thing, that’s just not how we do things. I’m embarrassed by it. Why are we doing it? It’s a 6-0 game. What are we doing there?»

Uribe offered an apology through an interpreter shortly after the game. While acknowledging his mistake, he also alleged that St. Louis manager Oliver Marmol had previously signaled for his players to intentionally target Brewers batters. Marmol chose not to comment on Uribe’s accusations or his post-game antics.


Uribe’s Standing with the Team

Now in his fourth season, the 25-year-old pitcher has posted a 2-2 record with a 4.19 ERA across 21 appearances this year. Despite the controversy, manager Pat Murphy maintained a sense of personal support for the pitcher while reinforcing that his conduct was crossing the line:

  • The manager emphasized that such behavior is detrimental to the team environment.
