A Critical Defensive Error
During the pivotal closing minutes of Thursday's Sweet 16 matchup against Iowa, Nebraska committed a devastating unforced error that effectively ended their season. With the game tightly contested, the Cornhuskers inexplicably took the floor with only four defensive players, a mistake that Iowa exploited to seal a 77-71 win.
The blunder occurred with 58.8 seconds remaining. Iowa held a 71-68 lead and was preparing for an inbounds play under their own basket following a timeout.
Iowa Capitalizes on the Mismatch
As Nebraska’s defensive setup faltered, Iowa’s Kael Combs spotted his teammate, Alvaro Folgueiras, standing completely unmarked beyond halfcourt. Recognizing the numerical advantage, Combs delivered a precise long-range pass.
Folgueiras sprinted toward the basket unchallenged. Although Nebraska's Berke Büyüktuncel eventually managed to catch up and commit a foul as the shot was released, the layup was successful. Folgueiras then converted the subsequent free throw, completing a three-point play that extended Iowa's lead to 74-68, effectively putting the game out of reach.
Hoiberg Takes Responsibility
Following the defeat, Nebraska head coach Fred Hoiberg immediately assumed accountability for the tactical breakdown.
«Put that one on me. It was a miscommunication. I’m the head coach, and that one’s on me.»
When questioned regarding whether the officials should have delayed play until both teams had five players on the court, Hoiberg admitted he was unsure of the specific rule. «I’ve never been in a situation like that. I know they always count to make sure there’s not six. I don’t know the rule on that with four,» he noted.
Looking Ahead
With this victory, No. 9 Iowa advances to the South regional final, setting up a showdown against No. 3 Illinois for a spot in the Final Four. Meanwhile, Nebraska’s historic season concludes. While the team celebrated its first two NCAA tournament wins in program history, their exit will be remembered for the heartbreaking lapse in the final minute against the Hawkeyes.
