The NFL's franchise tag period is now underway, with several star players potentially receiving the designation to keep them off the free agent market. While many are eligible, the actual number tagged is often low, as seen last year when only two players received it. The Dallas Cowboys are already expected to use the tag this offseason.
The franchise tag window runs from February 17 until 4 p.m. ET on March 3. During this time, each team can designate one impending unrestricted free agent, binding that player to the team for the 2026 season at a predetermined salary based on position.
Projected franchise tag salaries for 2026 include $47.242 million for quarterbacks, $28.037 million for wide receivers, $14.186 million for running backs, and $16.007 million for tight ends.
Top candidates for the tag include Dallas Cowboys wide receiver George Pickens, who is coming off a career year, and New York Jets running back Breece Hall. Other notable possibilities are Atlanta Falcons tight end Kyle Pitts, Los Angeles Chargers linebacker Odafe Oweh, Indianapolis Colts quarterback Daniel Jones, and Seattle Seahawks running back Kenneth Walker III, though reports indicate Seattle may not tag him.
As of now, no players have officially received the franchise tag for the 2026 season.
