According to Matt Foster of KSHB 41 News, the decision stems from an alleged positive test for marijuana, which has triggered a 30-day incarceration period that coincides with the team’s upcoming practice schedule.
Medical Recovery and Concurrent Custody
In addition to his legal situation, the 26-year-old athlete is recovering from a medical procedure. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Rice underwent surgery on his right knee last week to clear out loose debris. The expected recovery timeline for this procedure is approximately two months, half of which will be spent in custody.
To provide context on his legal standing, the judge in Dallas County previously issued a five-year probation sentence and 30 days of jail time following a 2024 multi-vehicle collision. Under the original terms, Rice was granted the flexibility to choose when to serve his 30-day sentence, provided he maintained compliance with his parole terms. By violating those terms, he is now required to fulfill that original sentence immediately. KMBC 9 News reports that he is scheduled to be released on June 16.
