Injury Concerns After Singles Defeat

Serena Williams’ highly anticipated return to Wimbledon has hit a significant setback. Following her first-round singles loss to Maya Joint, the 44-year-old athlete suffered a knee injury that now casts doubt on her ability to compete in the doubles event with her sister, Venus.

According to updates provided by her representative, Jill Smoller, Serena experienced issues with her right knee toward the conclusion of the first set. Due to this physical setback, medical staff from both Wimbledon and the WTA excused her from mandatory post-match media duties.

Recovery Efforts and Outlook

Despite the injury, there remains a glimmer of hope. Smoller noted that Serena departed the venue unassisted and is currently prioritizing recovery to ensure she can participate in the scheduled doubles match later this week.

“She left site that night unaided and is doing everything she can to be ready for her doubles match later this week,” Smoller stated.

Reports indicate that while the knee showed visible swelling following the match—to the point where staff offered the tennis star crutches—Williams chose to decline the support.

A Long-Awaited Reunion

The doubles match, slated for Thursday, July 2, carries special significance. Should Serena be cleared to play, it would represent the first time the sisters have competed as a duo at Wimbledon since their championship-winning run in 2016.

Serena’s path back to the grass courts has been brief but intense. After stepping away from professional tennis following the 2022 U.S. Open, she surprised fans with a comeback announcement in June. Prior to arriving at Wimbledon, she tested her form at the HSBC Championships and the Berlin Open, focusing specifically on doubles play.

Status for Thursday's Match

While Serena was absent from the Wednesday practice schedule, her sister Venus remains on track with her training sessions. This has provided a degree of optimism for fans hoping to see the legendary pair take the court together once again.
