A Monumental Chase
As the July 22 release date for 2026 Topps Chrome Baseball approaches, the collecting community is bracing for the arrival of what many consider a modern-day "white whale." The centerpiece of this release is a set titled "Back to Back Dual Gold Logoman Autograph Relics," which celebrates elite athletes who achieved the rare feat of winning major awards in consecutive seasons. Among the 1-of-1 cards in this series are those featuring Shohei Ohtani, Aaron Judge, and Tarik Skubal, with the Ohtani card widely expected to become the most valuable trading card in the world.
The Significance of Kanji Ink
What sets the Ohtani masterpiece apart from other high-end collectibles is the inclusion of his rare Kanji signature. The card features both a standard English autograph at the top and his highly sought-after Kanji script at the bottom. These Kanji signatures are extremely scarce and command massive premiums at auction. Furthermore, the card includes two game-worn Gold MLB Logoman patches—one from his 2024 MVP season and one from his 2025 campaign—creating an unparalleled piece of sports history.
"This card represents the absolute apex of modern sports memorabilia," industry observers note, with many predicting it will surpass the previous record-breaking sales of other Ohtani 1/1 cards.
Shifting the Hobby Paradigm
Mike Mahan, CEO of Fanatics Collectibles, views these multi-year relics as a way to evolve the trading card industry. While the hobby has historically prioritized rookie cards, Mahan believes there is immense value in commemorating an established star's peak performance.
"We saw an opportunity to get more closely aligned with established stars, particularly in their biggest moments," Mahan explained. "With a rookie card, you're hoping it becomes legendary over time. But with the Dual Gold Logoman, those pieces are already cemented in history. Even if he never played another inning, you're talking about a surefire Hall of Famer."
Looking Ahead
The move toward multi-year relics is part of a broader trend at Topps to capture historic milestones as they happen, similar to their "Black Dynasty" series. When asked if a future third consecutive award-winning season for Ohtani could lead to an even more elaborate card, such as a triple-patch booklet, Mahan hinted at the logistical challenges of card design, humorously noting, "I have to figure out the real estate of it all... Where does it end with Shohei?"
