Managing the Sunlight at AT&T Stadium
AT&T Stadium in Arlington, which will temporarily be referred to as Dallas Stadium for the duration of the upcoming World Cup, is set to host nine matches, including a high-stakes semifinal. To ensure optimal playing conditions, FIFA has confirmed that it will utilize the stadium’s blackout curtains to mitigate the impact of direct sunlight during at least one of these fixtures.
While the venue is equipped with these curtains—frequently utilized for high-profile non-football events such as major concerts and WrestleMania—Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has historically declined to deploy them for NFL games. This reluctance has persisted despite recurring complaints from players regarding the late-afternoon sun creating visibility challenges.
Addressing a Recurring Visibility Issue
The problem gained significant traction in 2024 when Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb struggled to secure a catch due to the glare. Following the incident, Lamb expressed strong support for using the curtains, stating he was «one thousand percent» in favor of the measure. Conversely, Jones has previously defended the stadium's design, remarking:
«By the way, we know where the sun is going to be when we decide to flip the coin or not. We do know where the damn sun is going to be in our own stadium.»
FIFA’s Strategy for World Cup Matches
According to a spokesperson for the event, FIFA maintains full operational control over the stadiums during the tournament. The organization has announced that the curtains will be drawn for the June 25 group stage match between Japan and Sweden, which is scheduled for a 6 p.m. kickoff. Regarding other matches, a FIFA representative stated: «The venue team will remain vigilant and assess whether the curtains will be needed for any other matches.»
Most of the games scheduled in Arlington will take place either in the early afternoon or well after the sun has set, making the curtains unnecessary for the majority of the competition. The Japan–Sweden match stands out as the only contest that aligns with the sunset period.
Broader Tensions Over Venue Requirements
The implementation of these curtains highlights the influence FIFA exerts over NFL venues, often mandating changes that players have advocated for over several years. Another notable point of contention is the transition to natural grass surfaces. FIFA requirements forced the installation of a temporary grass field at AT&T Stadium, which prompted NFL players to call for similar upgrades for their own league games.
The NFL Players Association recently criticized league owners for prioritizing FIFA's standards over the daily needs of their own athletes, emphasizing that players «deserve workplaces that prioritize their preference, protect them against the weekly wear and tear of the game, and support their long-term health and performance.»
