Prize Money Breakdown
The 2026 Kentucky Derby maintained a total purse of $5 million for the third consecutive year. The champion horse, Golden Tempo, and its associated team secured the largest share of this prize, taking home approximately $3.1 million.
The financial rewards for the top five performers in the race were distributed as follows:
- Golden Tempo: $3.1 million
- Renegade: $1 million
- Ocelli: $500,000
- Chief Wallabee: $250,000
- Danon Bourbon: $150,000
Distribution Among the Winning Team
From the $3.1 million awarded to the victor, the division of funds is structured to reward the key contributors to the horse's success. Owners receive 80% of the prize, while trainer Cherie DeVaux—marking history as the first female trainer to claim a Kentucky Derby victory—and jockey Jose Ortiz each earn 10%.
Regarding the jockey's cut, it is worth noting that while the technical share amounts to $310,000, these earnings are typically shared with their agent and valet.
The Kentucky Derby Trophy
Beyond monetary gains, the prestige of the race is symbolized by the Kentucky Derby Trophy. Standing at 22 inches tall and crafted from 14-karat gold, the primary trophy is awarded to the winning owner. Additionally, members of the horse’s supporting team, including the trainer, jockey, and breeder, are honored with silver-plated replicas that are half the size of the original.
