Aggressive Moves by Dallas
During last month's NFL Draft, the Dallas Cowboys were highly active in their pursuit to improve their position in the first round. According to the ESPN documentary “The Pick Is In,” the Cowboys attempted to trade up to the No. 9 overall spot, which was held by the Cleveland Browns, before eventually striking a deal with the Miami Dolphins.
The proposed trade package from Dallas included sending their No. 12 and No. 20 overall picks, along with a fifth-round selection, to Cleveland. In return, the Cowboys sought the No. 9 pick and the No. 24 overall pick. However, the Browns leadership opted to reject the proposal and stay put.
The Browns’ Strategy
Cleveland’s General Manager Andrew Berry maintained the team’s draft capital after previously moving from No. 6 to No. 9 in a separate transaction with the Kansas City Chiefs. Ultimately, the Browns selected offensive lineman Spencer Fano and wide receiver KC Concepcion.
Internal discussions within the Browns' war room highlighted high praise for Fano. National scout Zach Ayers expressed significant confidence in the selection:
“We’re getting the best tackle in this entire draft. This kid's rare combination of athleticism, quickness, strength, and his ability to excel on pass protection, is truly something special. He's an excellent run blocker. He's gritty, he's tough, he’s rangy. And the most important thing: This is the best person in the entire draft. This is one of the highest-character guys I've done in the 10 years I've been on the road.”
Aftermath and Industry Recognition
Following the failed negotiations with Cleveland, the Cowboys finalized a trade with Miami to move to the No. 11 spot, where they drafted safety Caleb Downs. Dallas also eventually moved the No. 20 pick to the Philadelphia Eagles.
Despite the skepticism that can surround draft decisions, the Browns received validation from around the league regarding their choice of Concepcion. Reports indicated that multiple front-office executives from other organizations reached out to Berry and his staff, confirming they had been attempting to trade up to secure the wide receiver themselves.
