During the final round of the Masters, the performance of 2017 champion Sergio Garcia took a chaotic turn. Paired with compatriot Jon Rahm, Garcia hit an errant tee shot to the right on the second hole, a moment that triggered a significant display of frustration.
The Incident and Equipment Damage
Following his wayward shot, Garcia’s reaction was immediate and destructive. Witnesses report that he slammed his club into the tee box surface before striking a nearby cooler with enough force to snap the head off his driver. In an unusual turn of events, the professional golfer then proceeded to pick up Jon Rahm’s golf bag and carried it down the second fairway.
Official Response and Augusta Protocol
Such displays of temper are viewed strictly by the officials at Augusta National. According to reports, Geoff Yang, chairman of the competition committee, issued a code of conduct warning to Garcia regarding his behavior on the course.
Augusta National maintains a high standard of decorum for its participants. For instance, earlier in the tournament, Robert MacIntyre was also reportedly addressed by officials following an obscene gesture made after hitting a ball into the water on the 15th hole.
While inappropriate gestures are frowned upon, damaging the course infrastructure is considered a more severe breach of tournament rules. Consequently, Garcia, who was sitting at +6 for the event at the time of the incident, was formally spoken to by officials before reaching the fourth tee.
