Mike Breen, the celebrated lead play-by-play announcer for ESPN/ABC and the New York Knicks, stands today as a titan of sports broadcasting. As he prepares for his 21st consecutive NBA Finals, it is difficult to imagine a time when his voice wasn't a staple of professional basketball. Yet, the 65-year-old veteran recently revealed that his professional journey nearly ended before it truly began.
The Turning Point: When Dreams Met Financial Reality
During the early stages of his career, after struggling to secure consistent positions—including a disappointing attempt to land the play-by-play role for Villanova—Breen found himself at a crossroads. He was barely making ends meet, relying on financial assistance from his parents just to cover his rent.
Recalling the depths of his frustration, Breen shared:
«I was thinking, ‘I can’t do this anymore.’ I’m not making any money. I had to borrow money from my parents to pay for my rent. I told my dad, the steam fitter, I was thinking of quitting. I said, ‘Why don’t you give me the application for the steam fitter union? Maybe I’ll do that, and I’ll start making some money.’»
Fatherly Wisdom and the Road to Stardom
It was his father, a former Marine, who provided the pivotal advice that changed the course of sports history. His father reminded him that he had committed to a five-year timeline to establish himself in the industry and that he still had two and a half years of that promise remaining. Encouraged by his father to persevere, Breen stayed the course.
The breakthrough followed just six months later when Breen landed a production role at WNBC Radio. This opportunity allowed him to step in for established hosts, providing the exposure necessary to land his role with the New York Knicks in 1992. By 1997, he transitioned to television, cementing his status as a permanent fixture in the Knicks' booth by 2004.
